Caller ID said VERIZON- 1-800-837-4966. Said he was my son, was in a car wreck, was in the hospital/locked up. Wanted me to call lawyer John Rodriguez - 866-662-1940 ext 4. Caller had slight accent.
Trojan Mom replied 11/12/19, 1:46 PMI got this exact same call. Really created a stressful situation. Glad for this site to confirm it's a hoax. -

My “son” called from the hospital, after being in detention the previous night, telling me he sounded different because he had a neck brace on, that the police had confiscated his phone. He pleaded with me to call his public defender, who would explain everything. The defender explained a pregnant woman had been hit by my “son”, who was being charged with a DUI, that they had been before the judge and bail was set at $50,000, so we would need $5000 to get him discharged. It was at that time my son called my wife to chat, saying he had just gotten out of class.

Tried getting $5K in cash saying my family member got hurt in an accident & hurt someone else & was looking to collect money to prevent him from being put in jail. He then said my son was in jail & I needed to send him cash. It was a lie-my son was never in an accident.

He called me mom, said he was in hospital, hurt, he might have killed someone in a car accident! He said the police appointed him a lawyer at the hospital, I only had one call to make before they took him to jail, he asked me to call this lawyer, John Ho, 1-866-266-1940 ext. 4, and talk to him to see what’s going to happen with my son.

As Val and Sherry above, received a call on 10/30 from "my son" voice was very convincing as it sounded like him and used some of the same sentence structures and such, but the number was id'd as "unavailable" The number above was for the public defender's office - John Hall/Ho.
