Caller, Benjamin, said cable box needed software update. Said it was updating through box. Then said I was a good paying customer and a senior so was discounting my bill by $30, said new billing will start Oct ( now June 1st). Proceeded to tell me that July, Aug and Sept. would not have to pay anything ( 0 bill) but would have to pay $199.99 for the software update. I asked if I was going to be auto billed and he said no I should a check in the next 2 days to : Optimum Cable

Received a call from "my cable company". Quite a smooth pitch. Wanted to update my cable box. Also, since I was a valuable, long-term customer, they were going to lower my bill by $30 a month. All I had to do was send in a security deposit of $199. In advance, of course. Naturally, my cable company new nothing about any update to my cable box.
